Social Studies research - Climate and weather report with a commercial.  Small groups of students research the climate and weather of a city they select from a list (one city/research station per continent).  They use CultureGrams to get events/recreational activities to find something to "sell," as well as appropriate greetings, gestures, and currency.  Student create a TV style weather report with at least one commercial.  Reports are presented in class and video taped.  Lesson plan Student guidelines & rubric Citation sheet

I had students check for resources before they chose a topic using this form

POUND

This is the form I used to help students check for ample/quality resources before solidifying their research topics. It also addresses the former "pre-research" lessons that dealt with accessing resources, ABC-LOU note-taking, and citing...kind of a crash course. Takes one period to review: 1) finding print resources (books and WB encyc.), 2) navigating databases (World Book and netTrekker only for sake of time) and 3) a quick review of "caveman" notetaking and basic citation requirements. Second day is the actual "hunt" for resources: Resource Hunt

WHO IS THIS?

Pre-Research lessons:

  1. This year the field test teachers did Africa for pre-research - African animals (for the below grade level class), African countries (one on level class) and anything relating to Africa (one on level and one dif class)
  2. One team has done a "Wall of Honor" unit in Sept along with their "Courage" unit for the past 5 years. I have a list of "wall worthy" people who we have a book about and are also in World Book, Grolier, and Wilson Web (only the DIF classes use this).  Students take notes from (and cite) a book and two encyclopedias.  The final product is a "brick" with a picture of the person, facts about the person, and evidence of two personality traits that make them worthy of being on the wall.  Students share their bricks in small groups and then they are displayed as a wall in their pod.

Here is the form I have used to determine if we have the resources for 6th grade research topics.  It is a flow chart to be sure we have ENOUGH sources on the topic.dowehavetheresources.pdf

Web Evaluation Family Fued

Begin by telling the story of how Google almost started a war between Costa Rico and Nicaragua (http://thelede.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/11/19/the-google-maps-war-that-wasnt/).  Explain how information found online is often inaccurate and misleading.  Ask table partners to work together to answer the following:  What questions do we need to ask to find out if a website is trustworthy and reliable?   Divide students into two large teams and give them a few minutes to pool their answers and decide on which questions they believe are the most important to determine a website’s reliability.   Play a version of Family Feud in which the two teams compete to find out which five big questions must be asked to find out if a website is trustworthy and reliable:

  • Who is the author or publisher?
  • When was the information published or updated?
  • What is the purpose of the website?   (To educate, entertain, sell, or persuade?)
  • Is the information accurate?
  • Are the links to other web pages active and working?

Once the game is over, model how to evaluate a webpage using the five questions and demonstrate where to find the information hidden within the small print of most web sites.  Assign student partners two related websites to evaluate; one which is reliable and one which is bogus.  Students must look at each site carefully and fill out the attached sample organizer to determine which is which.  Once completed, partners will group themselves with other partner groups who evaluated the same sites to discuss what evidence they discovered and the proof they found to determine which site was trustworthy and which was unreliable.

Locating books in the library using the online catalog

Using the table-sized graphic organizer,  groups of four will begin by individually brainstorming all the necessary steps for locating a book in the library within their own corner of the organizer.   After 3-5 minutes of writing, demonstrate how to rotate the organizer so that each student takes a turn reading the ideas written by each of their tablemates.  Next, model the specific and detailed steps one must take in order to access the online catalog, identify and record a call number, and physically find a book on the correct shelf.  Encourage students to add missing details to their graphic organizer.  Once the process has been thoroughly modeled, assign each student both a fiction and non-fiction title to locate on the shelves.  Assess student understanding by making sure they independently locate the exact title and call number.  Once everyone has found both their titles, reassemble groups and work in teams to complete the final center circle of the graphic organizer by summarizing detailed instructions for finding a book in the library.  To conclude, each team will present their set of instructions to the class.

MICKLE-Laca

We changed the LACA career research to fit the media specialists recommendations to compare two careers and have them generate the questions.  We also have a page where they decide which of the two is best for them and explain why.  Our students had the best written conclusions they've ever had.

career REFERENCES sheet .doc Career Conclusion.doc CareerCOMPAREnotes2010.doc CareernotesDISCUSSION2010.doc

We also changed the Dewey activity at the beginning of the LACA curriculum.  Students were really disengaged when we had them writing titles of books from each Dewey Section.  So instead we taught them how to examine the section and determine how THEY would categorize each section and then we compared their words to the categories Dewey used.  The other half of class was talking about types of media and exploring what the media center website has to offer.

Research Fridays - Research process with Inquiry every Friday with LaCa.  Use photos as an anchor to generate questions.  Example follows: 1.  Using an image of Woodstock, students will write 3 questions.  Chart with two columns- one titled  “Thick” and one “Thin” will be displayed.  Students will then share while recorder (teacher) puts each question in the appropriate column.  Discussion on why each question was put where will follow and what they have in common (compare/contrast).   Elements of each (Thick and Thin) will be reviewed.

2.  Students will be given another picture, “The Kiss” and directed to write questions again and label each with “Thick” or “Thin”.  Staff/class will discuss a few as a group.  Feedback will be given to individual students as they write their questions.

3.  If time, students will practice writing questions with picture #3 - Earth.

4.  Staff will answer questions regarding each photo - background provided.

Other lessons include website eval., note taking, citation and actual mini research.

AccessingPrint_Hellman.ppt I use this PowerPoint and activity with LACA classes this year.  The kids like it and the exit tickets indicate that they "get" Dewey and how to find books. I took Kay's PPT from 6th grade and changed it to fit for my plans.  Next year, I will update it even more to prevent using the same slides with both sixth and seventh grades.   As soon as possible, I will upload a lesson plan form explaining how I do the activity in detail.
